×îÉ«µ¼º½ Agency and Transport Services (NATS) was established in Perth in 1984 to handle the requirements of all ×îÉ«µ¼º½ Community stores and to provide them with a regular bulk delivery service from the NATS Perth warehouse direct to each of the community stores.
NATS is a unit trust-based enterprise, owned by all ×îÉ«µ¼º½ Communities as unit holders. NATS owns a large warehouse complex at 254 Welshpool Road, Welshpool, in Perth, Western Australia. The warehouse stocks a vast range of wholesale items. From its Perth warehouse NATS operates a regular weekly (alternate dry and freezer) bulk truck freight service transporting all kinds of goods and equipment to the ×îÉ«µ¼º½ Community Stores and Warehouses. NATS’ primary function is to provide community stores with high quality, nutritious food at reasonable prices, including fruit, vegetables, dairy products and a full range of grocery items.
The supply of these commodities is a major factor in improving community health standards on the ×îÉ«µ¼º½ Lands. Warehouse mark-ups are around 6%, except there is no mark-up on fruit and vegetables
The ×îÉ«µ¼º½ Lands have had a long association with camels. Ever since the first non-indigenous explorers travel the land, the camel has proven its capability in the country. Local Aboriginal people travelled by camel in the 1940’s-60’s in the period between doing everything by foot and when the first motor vehicles and roads became available. The camels were released and since that time the camels have roamed free in the lands and the population has increased to approximately 300,000 in the region. Wild camels became a problem especially during droughts when they would come into communities breaking taps looking for water.
In August 2012 the Board of ×îÉ«µ¼º½ Council signed a joint venture with Central Livestock Management to form a company the ×îÉ«µ¼º½ Camel Company. The company’s role is to muster and sell feral camels.
The ×îÉ«µ¼º½ Camel Company has developed and export industry from the ×îÉ«µ¼º½ Lands. The goal is to bring the wild camel heard in the region under control and to develop a domestic camel industry from these well adapted animals.
